The Sila National Park

The Sila National Park Authority manages some of the most evocative and wild areas in the region of Calabria that contain vast and splendid forests that are spread out over gentle plateaus.

This location contains various rural and tourist villages, as well as profound artistic and cultural heritage. Recognized by UNESCO, the Sila National Park is the tenth Italian Biosphere Reserve listed on the World Network of sites of excellence. The Park is the ideal environment for hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, orienteering, bird watching, biowatching, nature photography, alpine skiing, cross-country skiing and so much more. TripAdvisor awarded the 2014 Certificate of Excellence to the Sila National Park yet another prestigious award given to the Park thanks to traveler reviews published on TripAdvisor’s website in recent years.

SILA NATIONAL PARK'S PATHS

The network of trails located at the Sila National Park is spread out over approximately 700 km for a total of 123 trails. Along the route there are clear signposts which indicate the path to follow and other useful info.

SILA NATIONAL PARK ARBORETO

The Arboretum of the Park - a biodiverse garden - is part of the district of the Fossiata Forest. Along the pathways one can admire majestic specimens of native and exotic species. To visit the Bat-House and the pond we suggest that you come equipped with underwater camera.

San Giovanni in Fiore

This town is an ancient inhabited center located in the Sila and it is linked to the figure of abbot Gioacchino da Fiore and the Florense Abbey, which represents the most important attractor. It is the administrative headquarters of the Sila National Park.

THE SILA SHIP - NARRANT MIGRATION MUSEUM

Housed in an old vaccheria, it tells us the story of Italian emigration from a non-regional perspective. The exhibition houses the reconstruction of an ancient ship, a collection of photographs, illustrations and covers of old magazines.

DEMOLOGICAL MUSEUM OF ECONOMY, WORK AND SOCIAL SILANA HISTORY

The exhibit is located in the Florensian Abbey of San Giovanni in Fiore and guides the visitor through a typical-thematic itinerary focusing on the objects that derive from the popular Silana tradition. You can also find the audiovisual and documentary archives of the ``Saverio Marra`` Photographic Fund.

EDUCATIONAL FARMS LOCATED IN THE SILA NATIONAL PARK

These farms are part of the ``Fattorie Aperte in Sila`` circuit. Groups of youngsters will be accompanied by the expert staff and will be able to practice both theoretical and practical training; adults are can participate in different cooking classes which are aimed at preparing typical Silane dishes.

LAKE ARVO

It is an artificial lake that was built between 1927 and 1931 as a hydroelectric basin. Today it lends itself to rowing competitions and in its waters are home to trout, perch, eels, tench and carp. The Royal Seagull can be seen all year round.

LAKE CECITA

It's an artificial lake built for the production of electricity. It also contains a dam which crosses Mucone River. It possesses an important archaeological heritage that came to light a only a few years ago restoring ancient testimonies of the Neanderthal man.
